Featured Film: The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is a chilling near-future dystopian drama set in the theocratic and totalitarian Republic of Gilead, whose constitution is founded on the Old Testament of the Bible. Following a fertility crisis in the nation, only 1% of women remain able to bear children. Those found to be “fertile” are forced into sexual servitude as Handmaids, whose sole purpose is to serve as pregnancy surrogates for the rich and powerful. Kate, one such Handmaid, is assigned to a prominent Commander and his wife, who are desperate to have a child. Children are considered properties of the elite.

As she struggles to survive within this oppressive system, Kate becomes entangled in dangerous relationships, moral conflicts, and acts of resistance as she fights for her dignity and freedom.

Starring: Natasha Richardson, Robert Duvall, Faye Dunaway, Elizabeth McGovern, Aidan Quinn, Victoria Tennant

First released in 1990, the film is based on the book by award-winning Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The novel has long been deemed controversial due to its themes of religious extremism, censorship, misogyny, and authoritarianism. It continues to be banned in some U.S. states and from some libraries in Canada.
