Why we support public schools with secular rather than faith-based mandates
In Canadian society, education must prioritize knowledge, critical thinking, and respect for cultural and philosophical diversity. Secular public schools are committed to these values, offering students a learning environment that reflects the rich plurality of Canadian life. In contrast, faith-based schools often prioritize religious doctrine over open inquiry, promoting ideological conformity within socially segregated settings.
Across Canada, every province and territory—except Ontario—has discontinued public funding of faith-based schools. They have moved toward a more equitable and unified education model—one that understands the importance of keeping religion and public policies separate to ensure that every student has access to the same quality of education while respecting all students and their families. It is time for Ontario to follow suit.
To ensure that all students have access to quality education grounded in reason, evidence, and open inquiry, we must safeguard our public institutions from undue religious influences. A truly progressive education system empowers students to explore academic instruction freely—without fear, or bias, or boundaries.
