Secular vs faith-based schools

Why we support public schools with secular rather than faith-based mandates

In Canadian society, education must prioritize knowledge, critical thinking, and respect for cultural and philosophical diversity. Secular public schools are committed to these values, offering students a learning environment that reflects the rich mosaic of Canadian life. Faith-based schools often prioritize religious teachings and support ideological conformity within their communities. To ensure that all students enjoy the benefits of a quality education rooted in reason, evidence, and open inquiry, it is essential that Canada’s public schools remain free from undue religious influences. An inspiring and progressive education system encourages students to explore academic instruction openly—embracing curiosity and learning, and free from fear or bias.

Across Canada, most provinces have discontinued public funding of Catholic public schools. They have moved toward a more equitable and unified education model—one that understands the importance of keeping religion and public policies separate to ensure that every student has access to the same quality of education while respecting all students and their families. It is time for Ontario to follow suit.
