Featured Film: “I, Pastafari: A Flying Spaghetti Monster Story”

Join us for the 2019 film I, Pastafari: A Flying Spaghetti Monster Story, a cheeky documentary that follows members of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, known as “Pastafarians” as they battle bureaucrats to secure the same legal rights and recognitions granted to more “traditional” religions.
Through sincere and often delightfully absurd efforts to wear colanders in official photos, demand equal signage rights, and argue their case in European courts, the film poses a deceptively simple question: who gets to decide what is a “real” religion? With its noodly deity, pirate-centric cosmology, and earnest followers who take their mission seriously while cleverly challenging questions of religious freedom and equality, this documentary is as thoughtful as it is hilarious. Prepare for a comedic feast that invites viewers to rethink the rules of belief, identity, rights, and freedoms in unexpected ways. R’amen.
Pastafarianism was founded in 2005 by satirist and physicist Bobby Henderson in response to the Kansas State Board of Education’s efforts to teach creationism in public schools. The following year he released The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, introducing a deity depicted as a tangle of spaghetti with two meatballs as eye-stalks and requesting that it be taught alongside creationism, since the evidence for spaghetti and meatballs is, after all, quite compelling.
