FEATURED FILM: Hidden Figures

The 2016 film Hidden Figures is based on the remarkable true story of three African-American mathematicians whose brilliance helped propel NASA to success during the Cold War–era Space Race. Working within the constraints of a segregated and male-dominated environment in the early 1960s, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson transform daunting obstacles into opportunities through intellect, daring, perseverance, diligence, and mutual support.
Johnson’s mastery of analytic geometry proves vital in calculating the orbital trajectories that guide John Glenn’s historic flight. Vaughan, recognizing the promise of electronic computing, teaches herself FORTRAN and leads her colleagues into a new technological era. Jackson challenges discriminatory laws in order to train as an engineer and becomes NASA’s first African-American female engineer.
Through their commitment to reason, scientific inquiry, self-reliance, and the courage to oppose unjust systems, these women personify key principles of Humanism. By paying tribute to these real-life heroines, Hidden Figures affirms a profoundly humanist truth: that progress arises from the collective ingenuity, dignity, compassion, ethics, and determination of people, not from destiny or divine intervention.
