Dr. Christopher DiCarlo’s Critical AI Awareness Initiative seeks to ensure that the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), including the emergence of superintelligent systems, is guided by stronger democratic oversight, rigorous ethical frameworks, and greater public understanding.

As AI evolves at an unprecedented speed, the gap between what this technology can do and what society understands about it continues to widen. Through public education, rigorous research, policy engagement, and collaboration with industry and civic leaders, this initiative promotes responsible AI governance while addressing urgent concerns such as impacts on mental health, economic disruption, and global safety. It also calls on Canada to strengthen its leadership on international oversight efforts.

Dr. DiCarlo is a respected scholar and author, and an award-winning educator. He is affiliated with the University of Toronto and serves as a faculty member in The Life Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University. With decades of experience in teaching critical thinking, cognitive evolution, and AI ethics, Dr. DiCarlo brings the expertise and leadership needed to guide this essential project.
